Talking Sustainability with Peony Swim

Talking sustainability with Peony swim

Answered by Becky Morton, the founder and director of Peony Swim

As always, we love your sustainable swimwear, what makes these fabrics more sustainable?

Thank you, we are so excited to see such a beautiful curation of peony pieces at Sarafox & Co.

Every single peony swimwear piece is made from recycled and sustainable fabrics. This includes our printed fabrics, our custom textures and even our inner linings. For our printed fabrics, we use fabric made from ECONYL®, a 100% regenerated nylon made from abandoned fishing nets and nylon waste from landfills and oceans around the world. For our custom textured fabrics, we develop these in-house using GSR certified recycled fibre, such as Repreve®. These fabrics are incredibly unique and exclusive to peony. Lining makes up 50% of swimwear fabric consumption and is often overlooked. Our linings are made from recycled and sustainable content, because our commitment to sustainability runs through every layer of our ethos as well as our swimwear. These fabrics are incredibly unique and exclusive to peony.

In short, regular nylon is made from non-renewable petroleum oil which is a significant contributor to global warming. Recycled nylon differs from this because it is made by regenerating nylon goods that are already in existence, thus significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the fabric and saving the earth’s precious resources.

How did you transition towards sustainability and what was the most challenging aspect?

We started by introducing fabrics made from recycled content and ensuring we partnered only with SA8000 approved suppliers. This is the leading social certification standard for factories and organisations across the globe.

We then overhauled the packaging within our supply chain to be compostable and biodegradable. In terms of our fabrics, this is where we really push the boundaries of what is possible to create our own custom sustainable fabrications that are uncompromising on luxury. We refer to this process as a journey because as we progress down this path, we realise there is always more to learn, new ways to adapt and endless possibilities to evolve. We are not perfect, but we are committed to constant evolution and progress.

Tell us about the sustainability practises within peony House?

We are in a constant state of reflection and progression. At the beginning of each collection we ask ourselves “how can we make this fabric better?” or “how can we streamline that process?” We engage in constant open conversations with our team and our suppliers as we rely on them to support us on this journey. It’s about accepting that we are not perfect and striving for constant evolution and progress.

We care about all the little things and also have some huge goals for the future. For example, all packaging within our supply chain is compostable and biodegradable but we are currently looking to take this further so it extends to essential items like our hygiene stickers and even the miniature bags that hold our removeable straps. On a macro level, we are working to become a completely sustainably produced and carbon neutral business. In order to achieve this, we are undergoing quantification which will measure our carbon footprint as a business and highlight how and where we can improve. We are all looking forward to going through this process and sharing our progress with our community.

How do you see peony evolving in the future?

Constantly and with a strong focus on sustainability. Sustainability is the future of fashion and something I am incredibly passionate about.

There are so many incredible opportunities on the horizon for peony at the moment, the hardest part of my job is deciding where to focus our energy. We are operating in a very fast paced dynamic landscape – it is such an exciting time to be in fashion!

I want to continue to connect with our customers in an authentic way, listen to them, bring them into our world and allow them to take us into theirs. In the end, fashion is less about products and more about creating genuine connections between people and their values and ideas.

We love the new resortwear pieces! Tell us your favourite piece and why?

I adore our Le Spot Poolside Dress. It’s made from 100 per cent EcoVero™ so it’s super soft and easy to wear. It’s also extremely versatile. You can wear it buttoned up the whole way or unbuttoned over swimwear, depending on the occasion or your mood.
